The story of Grendel from the epic poem describes him as a towering evil creature derived from the pits of hell.  Also that his sole purpose on this earth was to cause misery and death and destruction. He was known to hate everything that human was and he wanted to eradicated humanity. "Till the monster stirred, that demon, that fiend Grendel who haunted the moors, the wild Marshes, and made his home in a hell. Not hell but hell on earth. He was spawned in that slime Of Cain, murderous creatures banished By God, punished forever for the crime Of Abel's death." This quote from the actual poem shows how the people of that time thought of grendel. That he was no more than a monster that is solely alive to kill.

In the few paragraphs taken out of the book Grendel showed the story in the perspective of grendels eyes. The Author gave Grendel a more human characteristic by letting us know his thoughts. But at the same time I saw Grendel as more of an animal then a monster. Yes Grendel was a monstrous being and seemed to be evil but I believe he might have just been hungry! I found it very interesting to see the story from the monsters point of view. This point of view also made Beowulf seem like a moster himself from the fear that grendel had. Even throughout the whole battle grendel seemed to belive that he lost by accident and he couldve won.
